Family/General Practice

AMC's family/general practice services are designed to take care of you and your family’s primary health care needs. We provide a full range of services for both children and adults, saving you the cost, time and occasional confusion of consulting separate physicians. We specialize in health promotion and disease prevention. We provide physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners with a variety of training and experience. Our physicians are trained in all major medical areas, allowing them to care for you and your entire family, from prenatal care through care for the elderly.

Our services include:

  • general check-ups for infants, children, adolescents and adults (including well woman exams),
  • prenatal care,
  • immunizations,
  • smoking cessation,
  • stress reduction, and
  • diet and exercise counseling.

Our clinics have on-site laboratories and x-ray machines, and patients can be seen on a walk-in basis.

The term "Family Practice" refers to the medical specialty concerned with the total health care of the Individual and the family. The scope of family practice is not limited by age, sex, organ system, or disease entity.

Immunizations

AMC provides immunizations to adults and children to prevent many diseases. All immunizations are available in either of our clinics; patients do not need to make an appointment - just come in and see us at any of our three clinics.

We provide the following State of Alaska-required immunizations for all school children:

  • DTaP protects against diphtheria (severe infection of the throat and respiratory tract), tetanus (or "lockjaw," a serious neurological disorder that may occur from a contaminated wound) and pertussis (whooping cough).
  • Polio protects against polio (a virus that attacks the spinal nerves, causing paralysis).
  • MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) (viral infections characterized by rashes, fever, and potentially serious side effects such as heart damage, pneumonia, infertility and birth defects when pregnant women are infected)
  • Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease spread from person to person or sometimes by eating food or drinking water contaminated with hepatitis A virus. Large hepatitis A outbreaks occur in Alaska every 7-10 years. Children under age 15 are most affected. There have been over 3,000 cases and at least 4 deaths in Alaska in the past decade.
  • Hepatitis B is a serious liver disease spread through contact with the blood or body fluids of a person infected with the virus. In about 10% of infected persons, the disease can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, liver cancer, or death.
  • Hib disease is a serious illness spread from person to person, often by people who don’t know they carry the bacteria. Before the vaccine was available, hib was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children under 5 years of age and caused about 2 deaths per year in Alaska.
  • Varicella (chickenpox) is a common childhood disease easily spread from person to person and through airborne droplets. Annually, varicella causes about 12,000 hospitalizations and 100 deaths in the U.S. In 1997, an Alaska child died from chickenpox complications.
